Kernel dependencies question

I recently compiled a new 2.6.1 kernel but it wasn't working properly. There's no sound, mouse doesn't work, doesn't mount the harddrives and who knows what else. I think all of these aspects i compiled as modules so I think I need "moudle init tools".(Is it true)
If I install the new version will my old kernel(the one I am currently using still be able to load modules with the new version?
If it can't is there some way I can direct it to the old tools?
Thanks
Bye

installing it should give you problems with old modules. and yes u need it for 2.6 kernels, you might have to upgrade other packages as well. Read the kernel requierments carefully.

you should be carful when compileing kernels, never compile anyhitng as moduels taht u need to boot (in example, your root fs should be compiled in, so shold whatever drivers are needed to acces the hard drive
