Angry kernel configuration problem

Hi,

Before posting this i have "google"-d a lot, and have went thru the archives but nothing's helping...
I am compiling kernel 2.4.19 for "RSVP-TE daemon for DiffServ over MPLS under Linux" under Red Hat Linux

the kernel compiled successfully but on booting it gives an error:
"kmod: cannot exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-3, errno = 2
VFS: cannot open root device "hda1" or 03:01
Please append a correct "root=" option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:01"

block-major-3 corresponds to
/dev/hda, but I remember putting in the support for the necessary block devices during "make
xconfig"...
errno = 2, corresponds to "file or directory not found".

What can be the possible causes & respective remedies for this error ?

thanx a lot,
Sundeep.

Hi,

possible causes: kernel option missing... check your hard drive chipset is compiled in your kernel... same thing for filesystem.
My advice is that a modular kernel is good 'cause it's lighter... but there are some options that you have to compile in your kernel as it will often access them (hard drive chipset, root fs type or network card if your station is a server)

yes but your drivers are compiled as modules... right???
or do you use initrd/ramdisk???
if you use ramdisk that can come from modprobe which is not present or at a wrong location...
Hope it helps

Hi Oliv,
I tried compiling with kernel-2.4.20 & it succeded, & as far as i know i used exactly the same kernel options which i had used with kernel-2.4.19.
Anyways, thanx a lot for ur help.
