kernel compile error

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I just compiled my kernel for the first time and I got this error:

ld: cannot open drivers/char/pcmcia/pcmcia_char.o: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [kallsysms] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.13mdk' make: *** [vmlinuz] Error 2

I searched google but didnt really come up with anything useful. Any help or pointers on where to start in finding out whats wrong would be appreciated.

did you miss a step
go through this and see if you are compiling properly.
