Question kernel compilation problems (CODA)

Hi,

i'm trying to set up CODA distributed filesystem for my project. i need to compile a custom coda kernel module that i got from CODA site for client side. The instruction stated that i need to run "make oldconfig" in the terminal and this error came out:

"I was expecting to find link at /lib/modules/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5/build pointing at the source tree. You might have to install a kernel-headers and/or kernel-kbuild package from your distribution that matches this kernel"

FYI, i have installed kernel-header package using kernel-devel-2.6.... but the error still came out.

I've searched the kernel-kbuild but the it is available for debian.

Can anyone give me hint to compile this custom kernel?????

First look into /lib/modules/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5/. build/ subdirectory should be a symlink, pointing to the kernel source. Is it?

Symlink is something like shortcut. It points to a different file or directory which can be anywhere in your system (different disk, partition etc).

Blinking red means the symlink is incorrect - the file/directory it points to doesn't exist. In you case build and source which should point to the kernel sources. I think you should install kernel-source package. Then the symlinks should point to the right directories (if you look into the symlink preferences or ll the directory, you will see which directory it will be). Headers are OK, but it's not all you need now.

Unhappy FC5 kernel destinaltion (missing link)

Hi,

I've seen the symlink file named "build" and "source" at /lib/modules/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5/. It has destination file to build kernel from that folder. i've found this at the status bar "build -> ../../../usr/src/kernels/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5-i686 Unknown (link)" and i've try to the destination from current folder but it does not exist.

So, where should i change to right link for kernel compilation?
how to change to link to the right destination?

The destination will appear when you install kernel-source package. You may also change the symlink, but only if you have another kernel source installed, what usually means another directory in /usr/src/kernels/
