kernel compilation: how to go about it?

installed redhat9 few weeks back and still going on factory settings.
could not find /usr/src/linux so could not start on compilation, help needed (maybe a neophyte's guide to kernel compilation!), especially becoz the HOWTO has been removed for review

if you're gonna try 2.6, i'd suggest you first install the stable, viz. 2.6.0
