kernel compilation

i want to know that is it necessary to download kernel image for kernel compilation??
can't one can compile his current kernel that is installed in his system???

It depends if you have the kernel source installed or not. Look in /usr/src, and see if your source is there. If not, you'll have to download it (or install it from a package that came with your distro) and put it there.

Depends whether you have the sources available with you or not, for the current kernel you are running. If you have them you can go on re-compiling else download.

What if you are about to upgrade the kernel from 2.4.x to 2.6.x ???

since you are using Slackware 10.0, so the kernel is 2.4.x. If you like to only compile it then there is no need to download the kernel image if the source is already present in /usr/src.
But if source is not there then download it from www.kernel.org/mirrors
Moreover if you like to upgrade from 2.4.x to 2.6.x then definitely you will have to download it.
