Wink kernel compilation

i tried compiling a 2.6 kernel. My curent sys conf is FC! with 2.4 kernle. Everything seemed to go on fine, i install mod-utils and ensured all the s/w req as given in the readme.txt of the 2.6 src , even the modules got compiled and were successfully installed into /lib/modules/linux-2.6/ , but something happens when i try booting. it freezes at a point saying

freeing kernel memory 166k free

and then blank , no activity, no debug msg,no panic msg, no info just a blank.

Can any1 forward some suggestions to retify this problem.

thking u ,

Firstly, reboot into your old kernel. Next, check the /var/log/messages file and check that there were no error messages that couldn't be sent to the screen.

Next, check your configuration, and make sure (in particular) that you have enabled support for either a framebuffer, or a VGA text console. You'll also need support compiled in for your hard disk controller, and hard disk type (you can't load these as modules or you won't be able to boot).

The most likely problem is a bad configuration, but there are other problems that could occur, including hardware that's compatible with 2.4 but not 2.6.
