Kernel before ALSA?

Hi, i've got Debian 3.0 woody on the 2.2.20 kernel installed recently. Noticed my sound card (Createive labs audigy series - S0 maybe?) isn't working. I looked around a bit, and found that ALSA looks promising to provide the needed modules and drivers. Their FAQ says that the 2.4 kernel is needed. I'm a big time newbie and am probably not up to upgrading my kernel yet.

Is there an easier way to get my sound card working? Or should I start reading about how to upgrade my kernel? Anyone have any suggested articles for me to read about it?

Thank you muchly!

Start reading to update your kernel. It won't work otherwise probably. There are 2 ways to update your kernel in debian. They start the same but at some time you can decide to make a debian package or just install it. Only use one way. I think there's a thread on how to compile your kernel in the linux general forum. It's stickied. If you don't know what an option does when you're configuring your kernel first check the help and otherwise ask if you need. Also make sure you know something about the hardware you have. That saves some trouble from stuff not working.
