Kernel 2.6 hanging decompressing

Hi,

I was running SuSE 9.1 Pro for about 6 months with no problems on my PC that is dual boot with Windows XP.

I decided to check out a newer versions and flavors of Linux. I tried SuSE 9.2, Fedora Core 3, Fedora Core 4 Test-3, KNONNPIX 3.9, and FreeBSD 5.6 all with no luck.

At the beginning of the install right after you select text or a graphical install(I tried both) and the Kernel starts to decompress, it gets stuck and hangs at "kernel_helper_thread" I have tried various thing but with no luck. It seems that the 2.4 kernel likes my machine but the 2.6 doesn't. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

System:

AMD K7 1 gig
512 megs ram
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO
ASUS A7V-E motherboard
2 IDE hard drives on IDE 1
2 CDROM drives on IDE 2

Cheers

For knoppix try the noapic and other boot parameters.
It could help you get around som ebuggy BIOS implementations.

look here for more details

The Part is: "When the messages of the Linux kernel and the Auto Configuration cannot be seen"

So after a lot of messing around and all the switches I could think of to throw at the Kernel and all the BIOS
settings I changed I finally got Fedora Core 4 Test3 to install! I actually underclocked my CPU and the corrected the
problem, even Knoppix would install. So not sure what was the problem but I will bump my CPU speed back to normal afterwards.

So my next problem is I install FC4 twice and after the reboot I just boot right into WinXP, skips right over the
GRUB loader. If I do a recue boot all the stuff is there fine, just seems no GRUB loader. Tips, suggestions? Other links?

Cheers
