supermount is if I remember correctly *not* in the mainstream kernel sources, so if you downloaded the sources from a kernel.org mirror and configured and compiled them without applying (and enabling!) the supermount patch you cannot use it. The latest available patch at the
website is for Linux 2.6.2 but later kernels are supported by different hacks (it is included in the love patch set for instance).
