Kernel 2.6.11 Upgrade

I am trying to upgrade to kernel 2.6.11 to enable the use of my wireless ethernet card.
I have, I believe, correctly complied the new kernel and created my initrd image. I added the following lines to my grub menu.lst file:

title Linux 2.6.11
kernel (hd0,2)/boot/linux/bzImage root=/dev/hda3
initrd (hd0,2)/boot/initrd-2.6.11.img

When I reboot my pc and attempt to boot using this configuration, I get the following error:

Error - Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,3)

I have searched googe, this website, and various other Linux forums trying various things that solved peoples' problems that are similar to mine with little success. I am using SuSE 9.0 Personal on a Gateway 200ARC computer w/ Intel Centrino processor.

Did you compile your devices filesystem support into your kernel?

If you're using reiserfs you'd need to enable support in the kernel config because by default it's off.
