kernal upgrade?

I am just entering the world of linux and have question about kernals. Running 2.4 kernal sarge. What is a kernal and what advantages do upgrades give you?
Remember I am new the world of linux and will probably be posting a fair bit , but do appreciate all responses thank-you.

New kernels such as 2.6 provide more device drivers for new hardware, new features such as preemptible kernel which can increase system speed, other improvements for a smoother running system in general and security updates.

Welcome to LQ and the linux world, if you have any more problems or questions, you know where to ask

Thank you for your wisdom. Now I understand. This seems like the obvious next step. I have read some guides pertaining to kernel upgrade with debian, as sarge is now a stable release anything in reference to testing now becomes stable? Or are there any more up to date guides you could direct me to? Thanks.
