Kernal update through RHN, NVIDIA no longer loads....
I am having a problem with my NVIDIA drivers.... I am running RH 9.0.It was suggested to update my kernal via RHN, from 2.4.20-19.9 to 2.4.20-20.9 so I did using up2date. When I booted my pc up again and chose the new kernal to boot with using grub it came up with the error that it could not start x. Then it gave me the option to try to boot using the generic geforce2gts drivers (that come with RH 9.0) so I accepted. I beleive it said that it had changed the XF86Config file.

My question is.Do I have to follow the NVIDIA install instructions again and install the drivers for this kernal? Or is there a way that I can get them to load when I use the newer kernal?

Any help is very much appreciated, as I am a linux n00b making slow but constant progress!:)

No, you'll need to reload the nvidia driver from again. And each subsequent time you update your kernel. The upside to this is that you should rarely need to update your kernel unless you are having driver support issues.

I just upgraded my kernel using synaptic. You will need to source code for the new kernel to reinstall the nvidia drivers. the nvidia drivers will search for the source code when run. All was fine afterwards.....lucky for me it was all fairly automatic as I am quite new to linux.

Thank you MasterC for the quick response. I followed the instructions here and reinstalled the driver for the newer kernal and everything is back to normal. Thanks guys.:)
