I am trying to load dream linux on an external HD I get it to start the boot but then I get kernal panic - not syncing: vfs: unable to maunt root fs on unknown -block (0,0) I am very new at trying to do anything like this. and do not understand what to do. That error generally indicates that your filesystem is not supported by the kernel or that it's pointed to another system.

You could create an initrd for your system then you would have to modify the bootloader to reflect the initrd.

If you use your install cd to boot then provide the boot information pointing to your installation recovery would be possible.

Just shots in the dark. You should try and provide detailed information (error messages) in the future so you can be aided properly.

You should search here on LQ for the subject. I know this has been covered many times.

The othe thing it points to is your kernel doesn't support your disk controller (assuming one is present). My first guess is since you're using an external HD, it would be the USB support in the kernel (assuming it's a USB drive). If it's an external SATA, it could be the SATA controller.
