Question Keeps locking up!

Just installed new-to-me video card [Geoforce GT-710] 2gb DDR3 and a new-to-me Acer 21.5" monitor. Running Linux Mint 18 on an Asus M3A76-CM motherboard. Again, not setting the world on fire with my hardware choices, but suits my needs just fine. Ever since I installed these two, my system has been locking up/freezing like a windows machine. Only a reboot will cure it. Figured I'm always one to upgrade the kernel when notified. Maybe go back a few versions. Did that. STILL doing it. What's wrong!?!?!

Have you tried testing your hardware (memory, CPU overheating, GPU not seated well as it is newly-installed)? Did you see anything suspicious on dmesg?
