kdm configuration mandrake 9.0
Hello all,
I have read more than I can handle about my problem both here and through google, and I'm still stuck. I'm trying to learn how to add a windowmanager to my graphical login and have so far been unsuccessful while trying fvwm2.
What I've done successfully:
configured the kdm menu to display fvwm2 as an option

What happened:
no window manager started after my login, just a blank screen the same color as kdm. I F2'd out of it back to the kdm menu.

What I assume:
I need to add a startup script somewhere or make sure the fvwm2 executable now residing in /usr/X11R6/bin is in the right path or directory.

What I tried:
1)From the KDEHandbook online:
Looking at my Xsession file in /etc/X11/xdm/
That Xsession file looked like:

#!/bin/bash -login
exec /etc/X11/Xsession $*
#Xsession ends here

:KDEHandbook says the Xsession file should have a part that looks like:
#now we see if xdm/gdm/kdm has asked for a specific environment
case $# in
case $1 in
source /opt/kde2/bin/kde1
exec startkde
[Et cetera until...]

: and I should add a similar code pointing to fvwm2
: So I look instead at the Xsession file in /etc/X11/Xsession , which in my case has a similar but fundamentally different look:

#now, we see if xdm/gdm/kdm has asked for a specific environment
if [ $#=1 ]; then
if [ -f $HOME /.desktop ]; then
. $HOME/.desktop >/dev/null 2>&1
elif [ -f /etc/sysconfig/desktop ]; then
. /etc/sysconfig/desktop >/dev/null 2>&1

: so I can't follow the KDEHandbook's specific directions for this file at least.

: I also tried adding an entry "08fvwm2" to /etc/X11/wmsession.d/ that looked like the other seven but pointed to /usr/X11R6/bin and created an executable startscript there called startfvwm2 containing:

exec /usr/local/bin/fvwm2

:to no avail.

I'm sure I'm missing something simple but I just can't see it. I would much appreciate a wise word on this. It's not that I really need fvwm2, I just want to learn how to do this. Thanks.

And an update of course!

found in /etc/X11R6/bin an executable "RunWM" that looks alot more like the KDEHandbook file than my Xsession file did. I'm going to back that up and mess with it.

Does anyone know off the top of your head where Afterstep would put itself if not in usr/local/bin or etc/X11R6/bin?
