KDE won't start
 

Hi... Today I found that when I start my Mandrake 9.0, I ended up at command line console instead of the X-Window GUI. I tried to type kde and press ENTER, but I got the following error message:

/usr/bin/nspluginscan: error while loading shared libraries: libXrandr.so.2: Can not open shared object file: No such file or directory.

ksplash: error while loading shared libraries: libXrandr.so.2: Can not open shared object file: No such file or directory.

kdeinit: error while loading shared libraries: libXrandr.so.2: Can not open shared object file: No such file or directory.

/usr/bin/startkde: line 204: xmessage: command not found. Warning: connect() failed: :No such file or directory.

ksmserver: error while loading shared libraries: libXrandr.so.2: Can not open shared object file: No such file or directory.

/usr/bin/startkde: line 212: xmessage: command not found. Warning: connect() failed: No such file or directory.

Error: can't contact kdeinit!
Waiting for x server to shut down.

What's wrong? I perhap deleted some files unintendedly. What should I do to recover kde? Thanks.

Type: startx at the command line instead.

Thanks twilli. I will try that when I am home. In the meantime, how about the reported missing files? And how do I make my Mandrake to run KDE by default as before?

The error messages are because you typed in the wrong command.

Hi Twilli, I have tried to execute startx and got the same error message (only shorter) but basically it said that x-server was shut down. I don't think my problem is the same with the thread you give me as I have already got my Mandrake run well for few days. I think I have deleted few files by accident. Is there any repair option from the Mandrake cds as in Windows? Thanks.

Hi Twilli, I have tried to uninstall (successfully) kde with all related dependencies using urpme command and then reinstall (successfully) kde with all related dependencies using urpmi command but I still can't get the GUI running. I have checked the inittab file and X11 was already set to be the initdefault.

The error message was still the same. I didn't record the whole error message but it ended with:

Error: can't contact kdeinit!
Waiting for x server to shut down.

Finally I decided to wipe out the Mandrake 9.0 installation and give Red Hat 9 a try. It's up and running now as dual boot with WinXP. And I am happy with Red Hat 9.
