KDE vs. Gnome

Newbie question: to start x windows from a text login on yellow dog linux, I type > startx

but how do I specify whether to load KDE or GNOME?

Yellow Dog is based on Red Hat, I think, so check if there's a /etc/sysconfig/desktop.

try setting it to either
DESKTOP="GNOME"
or
DESKTOP="KDE"

(but not both)
