kde sound system not working

Hi,

I am using Mandrake 10.1. And, i have installed alsa and xmms and mplayer are working fine. But, the system sounds are not working. I even tried to set the hardware soundsystem in "configure desktop" tool to point to ALSA. But, even then, i cant hear any sound. Sometimes, it says artswrapper failed to initialize... And, when i try to run artswrapper, this is what i get

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:549snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:549snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:549snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:549snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:549snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
can't register Arts::MidiManager
There are already artsd objects registered, looking if they are active...

Error: Can't add object reference (probably artsd is already running).
If you are sure it is not already running, remove the relevant files:

/tmp/mcop-shyam/Arts_SoundServerV2
/tmp/mcop-shyam/Arts_SoundServer
/tmp/mcop-shyam/Arts_SimpleSoundServer
/tmp/mcop-shyam/Arts_PlayObjectFactory
/tmp/mcop-shyam/Arts_AudioManager
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can some one please help me rectify this....

best regards,
Shyam

For the system sounds to play, arts server needs to be running. To enable arts server, go to control centre->sound. There, enable the Start Sound Server on startup. Now, in the System notifications, select play all sounds.
Now, if xmms or mplayer fail to play, change their output plugins to arts.
