KDE runs s l o w....
 

Hi,

I've been noticing that my computer is running SuSe Linux quite slow with KDE. I know that it is probably the slowest Desktop to run, especially with the old P2 with 256MB RAM that I have. I was wondering if there are any options, services, or processes that I can get rid of to speed this thing up.

KDE has, or at least used to have when I last checked, an app to "tune" it - how much eye candy is used / how efficient it is (the lower the eye-candy settings, the faster the usage). I don't remember the name of this tool, but it should be found either in the KDE menu somewhere, or then at the control center....it's the same app that (at least on my machine back then) started the very first time you logged in to KDE, and in which you specified the language and charmap settings and so on..

disable all gooey effects like fading and other stuff.
The thing b0uncer was talking must be "kpersonalizer". Its in the Settings menu in kde menu

Thanks guys, but I can't find kpersonalizer, so are these settings also found in the Control Center or Yast2?

run "kpersonalizer" from the run box or from a terminal.


if you wanna take a big slug outta kde, stop using kdm. I don't know why, but it slows everything down.

I tried to run it and it couldn't find the command. How would I go about disabling KDM?

disabling kdm ??? for what ? why ?

For some unknown reason, my computer runs much slower with KDM running the session than if XDM is or if you log in from the console with "startx" or "startkde". YMMV, but I have noticed a big difference in resopnse if you don't use KDM. I run it on my machine, though, because I like being able to shut down and change users with my mouse.
