kde logout goes to blank screen?

This problem just began recently and i have tried to reinstall kde with no luck.
When i try to logout of KDE instead of the normal process of returning to the login screen where i can reboot or shutdown it just goes to a blank screen and locks up. I have to pull the battery in order to shut down the machine.
If i use ctrl-alt-backspace from kde then it works fine and returns to the login screen.
I found a similar situation on google and the solution was to remove the call to kdeinit_shutdown from the startkde script and this did not work either for me.
I also tried calling the kdeinit_shutdown directly.

I am running Fedora Core 1 on a Dell 600m.
The KDE version is 3.1.4-6.

I'm actually using gnome, but for the tidbit of help I have to offer (I've only been seriously working w/ Linux for about a week) I don't think it should matter.

Just pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 will take you to a real terminal.

From there, type

shutdown -r now
The -r is for reboot.

I know this doesn't really fix your prob, but at least it'll be a quicker and safer way of getting back into the login until the situation's resolved. . . (Which I'm interested in find out how myself)

From what I've just read on other threads:

Ctrl+Alt+Del will go straight to a shutdown

Ctrl+Alt+Backspace seems to bring the login back in some cases of this blank screen prob
