KDE/Linux slow to a crawl ?

After viewing a few videos (on my system, not on internet) KDE and Linux slow down and freeze up. Anyone have a clue as to what could be causing this?
I thought about disabling the nvidia drivers (but I dont know how), does that make for a sensible approach?

I end up having to hit the restart button anytime I view videos.

Slackware 11, KDE 3.5.7

Thanks.

Do you have any current codecs installed?

Yes, I have codecs installed.

But I just found out that I have no swap space. Could that slow down my system?
If I let it sit for 10 minutes or so, it is back to normal operating speed.

That could, but not having any swap is extremely rare.
Do you mean there is no swap partition (cat /etc/fstab), or do you mean it fills up (try running top in an xterm whilst doing your stuff).

There is a swap entry in the fstab but I got a message in kde while xine was running saying no swap file available, Then the message disappeared quickly. Should I try activating the swap file with whatever that command was to do it?
Also, I noticed that several instances of xine startup with every video I open, I looked through all the documentation to see If I could only use one instance of the program but cannot figure out how. I remember other programs having that kind of option.

I dont remember the exact specs but its not a slow machine. It has 512 megs of ram. and an nvidia card with the drivers installed.
I started to issue a killall xine at the command line and that seems to stop the system from slowing down, but I have to do it every 6 videos or so. kinda strange?

show the /etc/fstab file, and show
top
before and during running the xine.

I cannot post the fstab because its on another machine but when I hit

Cntrl-Esc when the system starts to slow down theres dozens of xine

entries,

I do killall xine then my system is back to normal speed. Is there a way

to stop Xine from doing that?
