KDE is dirt slow, what do I do?
 

Ok I put mandrak 9.2 on my friends 1ghz 128 mb ram computer and I chose KDE for the window manager cause I figured he would need it to be as much like windows as possible. But it takes like 8 or 9 seconds for mozilla to launch which is retarded. Should I change the window manager or is there someway to speed things up? And if a change of windows managers is in order, how do I go about that ?

There is a setting for KDE where you can turn down some of the effects. I would do that and see where that gets you.

Welcome to Linux! MozillaFirebird is lightning fast on my PIII 450Mhz/384Mb box. KDE bout the same responsiveness as Windoze untuned. There are some hard drive tuning things I've been seeing but haven't tried yet. For instance, IDE DMA is not turned on by default. Sorry I can't give you any more info, but I'm still trying myself!

Use XFCE :-)

Seriously though (not flaming)...I tried Gnome and KDE and then I found XFCE....it's very fast and I'm still able to run Kicker (the KDE panel) if and when I need it (haven't really needed it much though).

Otherwise if you're stuck on KDE then I think you'll have to do what he said and turn down some of the special effects.

Excellent choice. XFCE has small footprint and uses less resources. Definitely a more nimble and responsive environment.

I have found Fluxbox to be extremely fast and stable.
Never could go back to Gnome or KDE after Fluxbox.
