KDE in Kiosk Mode
 

Hello, I'm trying to build a kiosk using Linux KDE Desktop. I Create a new user and with the Kiosk Admin Tool, I make some preferences for that user. Until here there isn't any problem. The problem is that, when I logon with that user account, the changes that I have made in Kiosk Admin Tool doesn't appear on that profile. I really nead to finish this work and I can't find any information regarding to this problem. Can someone help me please?? Sorry about my english. It's not my native language. Kubuntu, KDE, Kiosktool not restricting desktop
 

Hi..I too have this same identical problem. I installed Kubuntu on a fresh HDD, installed Kiosktool, setup a new user, selected restrictions for the various components, configured a new profile and selected my new user to be active in that profile. But when I logon as newuser the restrictions selected in kiosktool do not apply to the desktop.

Since there are two of us with the very same issue, perhaps someone could advise us what to do.

Kiosk doesn't work very well on KDE4, which version of KDE are you running?

Myself KDE 4.1.2.

Any idea of the version of KDE that kiosktool does work with. Maybe I can install an older version of the desktop.

I have found that the KDE 4.x have a diferente file structure than version 3.x. To use the Kiosk software you need to use the 3.x. Just becarefull with a option that is available. First time I selected the "Taking out Logout Bottun" and I had AutoLogin. Was a very dificult job to take that function after that because i couldn't logoff. I had to find the conf file to take out that option. But it's a very usefull tool and very easy. Please make something like that to KDE 4.x.

Ok..so it seems that the kiosktool, or 'Kiosk Manager' as it is sometimes called, was built to work with KDE3 but isn't supported under KDE4, at least not at this point in time anyway. This would explain things of course. As a general noobody I now need to consider what strategy to take from here.

As I see it, it comes down to these choices:

1. I could just junk my existing Kubuntu_8.10 and download and install Kubuntu_8.04. This would give me the KDE3.5 desktop and presumably kiosktool in a working state.

2. I could download the KDE3.5 desktop and install it onto my Kubuntu_8.10, however I am not sure if this is doable or not since I would end up with two versions of KDE on the same install. I have, in previous lincarnations, had gnome and KDE destops both installed in ubuntu_8.10 but I am not sure about having two versions of KDE on the same install. Will they conflict?


I am wondering whats the best tack with regards to OS versions and desktop versions in situations like this?

And there is another issue that springs to mind, and that is the matter of updates. If I did install Kubuntu_8.04, then I am sure I would be presented with a 'gazillion updates available' message. The question arises as to whether accepting those updates would break my install in terms of kiosk tool?

I guess this means, semi officially, that Kiosktool only works with KDE 3 and does not work for KDE4, and is no longer included in stock releases of kubuntu.

But the same page implies that Kiosktool also works in Intrepid Ibex, but the Intrepid Ibex (aka Kubuntu 8.10) which I downloaded has KDE4 as the default desktop, and although kiosktool was part of that distro, it simply does not work, apparently.

I am now wondering when KDE changed from 3 to 4 and what the version of kunbuntu was at that point and if there are versions of Kubuntu 8.10 (aka Intrepid Ibex) that have the KDE 3.5 desktop.

Kubuntu it's not KDE. Kubuntu it's the linux distribution, KDE it's the graphical tool (Windows GUI) that help's you do stuff visually. You can install KDE 3.5 in Kubuntu 8.10. Just have to do it by hand and not using that Installers builtin in Linux. My choice was using Kubuntu 8.4. The package it's on Kubuntu download page and it is supported still. The diference between the KDE 3.5 and 4 it's the graphical part and 3.5 works very fine to me. If you want to use kiosk tool you just need to have a web browser and some Messenging tool. To do this you don't need a fancy User interface. It's a matter of time that someone adapt's Kiosk tool to KDE4. We just have to wait ;).

I do understand the difference between between the OS and the GUI, but generally see the GUI as being integrated into the OS rather than an application that runs on the OS. Kiosktool is definitely an application in this sense, but again only works with a specific GUI, ie KDE3.

Either way it amounts to the same problem. I did consider downloading KDE3 and installing it onto my kubuntu 8.10 but could not see how to do this. As you say it has to be done manually, but I don't know how to do that, best to download Kubuntu 8.04.

All this downloading of iso images has max'd out my internet connection datacap so have to wait now till monday. Yesterday I did download Kubuntu 8.04 but the resulting iso had a checksum error and was useless. Dang!!

I have downloaded kubuntu-8.04.2-desktop-i386.iso on two seperate machines, using two seperate connections and ended up with two files with identical checksums being FCD41D36F7EE87A03A81BBE9AC3A83B1 in both cases. I think I can assume that these two files are identical, and are therefore good downloads.

This site https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ub...hes#8.04%20LTS has the official hash codes for kubuntu but only lists the kubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso which is of course a different release. 8.04.1 versus 8.04.2

I burned the 8.04.2 iso image to a CD and have tried it in four different PC's, two being new ones (less than 6months old)and two being older machines (several years old). In no case could I get Kubuntu 8.04 to boot fully from the live CD. In each case the PC recognised the CD and began the boot process but failed to boot fully, in some cases just stopping mid boot and in others returning an error message.

And I thought linux was supposed to just work outa the box.

Good news..I was having big trouble with iso downloads. I burnt them onto CD using isorecorder, they booted, but on four separate machines, all different in age and hardware, the boot would never end up in a state that I had control.

Blank screens, errors about apic, scrolling error messages that cant be read, all sorts of crap. Each machine had a different response. I guess they had linuxophobia!.

Then..I read on google, somesite about starting in failsafe mode. I guess its much like windows safe mode. F4 took me there, and I set it.

Then the ducks started lining up and things worked. I installed KU8.04 and it now boots. Next is to figure out kiosktool.

In my case it works very fine. I have downloaded from kubuntu official website, just have to look for it. If you need any help jusp post a message here.
