KDE freezes ...
 

KDE freezes spontaneously and theres nothing I could do but restart by pushing the power switch. It can't be hardware(maby it could, but probably not) because MS Windows runs just fine. Linux has all the programs I need plus the multiple desktop feature which I really like, helps keep organized.

KDE used to freeze for about 5 seconds, but that is fixed thanks to prevous posts in this forum, but this last problem remains for me, once the spontaneous freezing stops Linux would be perfect for me.

Probably a dumb question, but you have tried CTRL+ALT+Backspace, right?

Also, is this the Slackware box you are having problems on?

Yes I have tryed CTRL+ALT+DEL, I also tryed CTRL+ALT+F1-7. I don't know what you mean by "Slackware box". Do you mean am I running Windows and Linux on the same computer? Yes I do run Windows and Linux on the same computer.

Actually, he meant the computer that you are having a problem on, is it Slackware? Anyways, it could be a memory issue. How much ram do you have and how much is shared and aperture?

If you're running Slackware, you're probably having this difficulty because you're logging into KDE as root. Don't panic, there are things you can do to fix this. This has been recently (within the past month or two) discussed in the Slackware forum.:cool:

Just realized it clearly states in his dist as slack10.1 =P.

And KDE in 10.1 never gave me a problem. I can easily log in as root and do mostly anything without any sort of freeze (aside from a little lag). Not sure if this is a problem for different hardware.

64mg for aperture(From Bios setup)
512mb of ram + another 512mb of swap.
Where do I look to find how much ram is shared?
Iam not logging in as root.
And yes I am having this problem on slackware 10.1


Problem Solved! I hope, because this freezes are very random and after I did this Linux didn't freeze anymore.

Solution:
as root do the following

goto /etc/X11
Make a backup of xorg configuration file, open xorg config file and scroll down to video configurations, I have ATI video card so I searched for "ATI" and there is the configurations for the video card. Scroll down and look for:
option "UseInternalAGPGart"
and set that to "no", save and restart your x.
