Ok, when using windows i use 800x600 for my screen resolution. so i do xorgsetup and it sets it up and everything and the default screen resolution is 640x480 i think. well that sucks because i cant see the entire menu's on alot of them. So i edit the .conf file for it and set it to 800x600 and when i log in, the screen is now to big o.o, wtf is going on here. I mean with it at 800x600 i can scroll and see the entire screen but i dont want it to work like that i want it to work without scrolling.

Ok and another problem im having. after running xorgsetup when i type in xstart or startx cant remmember which one. when kde does start up the font is so small i cant even read it. it looks like lines going across as text or something iono. anyway its unreadable. i was wondering if there is some way of setting it up a dif way to get the fonts to work right? because it also does the same thing in all applications i run also. like mozilla firefox and all that crap. Most of these things including screen resolution can be set in the KDE control center.

You can specify the screen resolution by editing the file xorg.conf or XF86.conf which sits in /etc/X11.


You should have DefaultDepth 24


Then, in the section corresponding to Depth 24, the resoltion you need should be the first of the line (e. g. "1024x768").


The line just below should be 0 0. If this does not prevent the screen from being larger than the screen (you see what I mean), you shloud put instead

1024 768

or whatever corresponds to your resolution.




You can indeed specify the fonts used in the KDE control center but normally everything should look good without the need for you to change anything. I have a guess. Maybe you are acking fonts. So KDE tries to use 'nice' fonts but can't find them so uses instead tiny bad-looking characters. A simple solution would be to install fonts. They usually come up in packages (at least with debian).

Ok... i set the screen size to 720x480 and i noticed something... the screen was still to big i had to scroll to get to one end to another but that isnt what botherd me about it really. what botherd me is that in some menus i still cant see the bottom part of there where stuff like Apply or Cancel is... is there a way to change the menu size?

Ok, after taking and copying the fonts from my windows over to linux and putting them in the /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/TTF_WIN directory, i then typed mkfontscale, mkfontdir, fc-cache. Then in the xorg.conf i put FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF_WIN". i typed startx and bam... no new fonts anywhere. Not to mention that whenever i log into another users desktop on my computer the text is still so small it cant be read. Please help me im losing my mind

O ya just as a little extra info. if i can ever manage to get to where i can change the font size, i have to change it to around 35 for it to be readable like it is in windows. Any idea why?

O ya... i just realized that you couldnt see the distro i use... so here it is, Slackware. Please help me im getting a headach with this
