KDE doesn't start after installation of new NVIDIA-driver

Hi!

I wanted to update the driver for My GeForce "Riva TNT2" to enable 3D-support. My OS is SuSE 8.1 pro. I downloaded the packages:

NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.suse81.i586.rpm
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.suse81.i586.rpm

and installed them as explained on nvidia.com KDE didn't start after I had installed this packages and I don't know why. Sax2 does not start, too. Is it a problem, that i used the packages for suse81-i586? I think Suse 8.1 is i386. What does this mean?

All i386 code will work with an i586 provided that you have an i586 processor (or a processor above this in the x86 series).

The problem here is that the NVdriver kernel module isn't loaded. Try running

Code:

modprobe nvdriver

You might also try modprobing for nvidia or nv.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to recompile your kernel, enabling support for the NVidia graphics cards.

I don't know about SuSe but the newest nvidia drivers wouldn't work with Fedora Core 3. I had to change the Driver line to "nv" instead of nvidia (nv is the standard xorg (or xfree in your case) drivers. that should fix your problem.

I tried to load the modules but was notified that the modules nvdriver, nvidia and nv could not be located.
Changing "nvidia" into" "nv" also didn't help.

Can you tell me how to recompile the kernel? I don't know, what went wrong.
