KDE allows 1280 and 1024, but not 1152

Hello,

I am new to these forums and new to linux. I decided to give it a try and installed slackware 10 on a spare box at work. I am having trouble getting my KDE resolution into 1152x864... it lets me choose 1280x1024 @ 60Hz (no thanks) and 1024x768 @ 75Hz (which is where I've got it now), but there is no option whatsoever to choose 1152x864.

Any ideas?

On a good note, I was able to get X up and running as well as Internet connectivity :)

Thanks in advance,
Seiken

Sounds familar to me :D

Ok which graphic card do you have and which device is configured in /etc/X11/XF86Config?

If the system setup installed the framebuffer device drive (fbdev) you only can choose VESA modes, which does not include the 1152 resolution. It also limits the refresh rates to 77Hz or less, depending on your monitor

I had a simular problem with my new ATI PCIe X300SET which isn't supported by any driver, but I found a workarround installing XOrg 6.8.1 and updated my configuration by hand.

Seiken 09-24-2004 03:10 PM

The card is an onboard Intel i815 chipset with 4MB RAM. i815 wasn't listed in the config though, so I chose i810.

In xorg.conf, I have:
Section "Device"
Identifier "** Intel i810 (generic) [i810]"
Driver "i810"
#VideoRam 4096
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

Mara 09-24-2004 04:43 PM

If the mode is detected you should be able to get it using ctrl+alt+'+' / ctrl+alt+'-'. The two key combination move you forward and backward on the resolution list. That's probably the easiest way to see what you really have configured. If it's not here, you can still probably configure it, but it requires digging in your X configuration.

DiWi 09-25-2004 01:39 PM

Another nice feature of KDE:
Try this: right-click on the desktop and go to Edit Desktop Preferences (or so). Now there's a Size & Orientation section. Ctrl+Alt+'-' or '+' doesn't work in the standard setup ;)

Anyway a good thing you should do first, look at the latest XFree86.0.log and examine the used graphic driver and Video modes

The Size & Orientation tab is what I've been using.

I can't seem to find that log file you mentioned (partially because slack 10 uses XOrg instead of XFree86, but mostly because I don't know where the log file is kept).

Might the problem be that I chose Intel i810 in xorgconfig? The PC has an i815 in it, but i815 wasn't in xorgconfig. I chose i810 because the generic driver displayed garbage (in the form of RGB vertical lines).

Here is my xorg.conf for what it's worth:

Do you see a 1152 resolution setting :D
Dither add it to the Modes line or replace all Modes line with

what does /var/log/Xorg.0.log say???
I
Search for Modeline and look the sections above and below of these entries
there should be alot of information

Dirk

Seiken 09-28-2004 02:02 PM

yes, there is a lot of information... but what do I do with it? is there a certain part you want to see?

Mara 09-28-2004 03:53 PM

You should have a long list like this one (I use NVIDIA card, but you should have something similar):
Code:

(**) NVIDIA(0):      Default mode "1280x960": 148.5 MHz, 85.9 kHz, 85.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0):      Default mode "1280x960": 108.0 MHz, 60.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0):      Default mode "1152x864": 108.0 MHz, 67.5 kHz, 75.0 Hz

Close to that section there should be also 'Not using...' list.
