how do i install KDE 4.2 in place of gNOME?

Have you got any previous version of KDE installed?

Minor correction. The current KDE release is 3.4.
As far as I remember, KDE 3.4 is not yet in unstable (and of course
not in stable). It is in the experimental repository (alioth).
