Unhappy kde 3.2 hangs when i log in. using mandrake 10.0

hi

i'm a newbie who's just upgraded from mandrake 9.2 to 10.o Official.

If I choose KDE as the gui when I login, it hangs, somewhere between 42% and 85% and after a while I am presented with a lovely blue screen and a mouse arrow, but nothing else.
I have to open a virtual terminal and kill X to close my session down.

I have tried various things to prevent this. I have removed my $HOME/username/.kde/
I have created a new user .
I have unistalled kde base (from mandrake system configuration tool) and then reinstalled it.

I'm getting a bit fed up with it because with mandrake 9.2 I preferred kde to gnome. I haven't actually had a chance to use this new kde, but I've read that its quite good.

Has it got a bug, has Mandrake 10.0 got a bug, or did I press the wrong button somewhere?

have you been messing about with your firewall ???

i got that exact same problem when i wrote my own firewall script and forgot to add the iptables -A INPUT -d 127.0.0.1 -s 127.0.0.1 -j ACCEPT line.

hi

firewall?? I don't think so. I opted for the firewall with the system configuration tool. I'm far too much of a novice to write my own firewall scripts. Praps I should try adding that line to a file? Which file? I'm getting really fed up with this business .

This is the result of my .xsession.errors file when kde hangs on me:

o the constructor!
kded: WARNING: KGenericFactory: instance requested but no instance name passed t
o the constructor!
.xession-errors lines 1-10/10 (END)

However, I read from someone else who had the same problem that it might be caused by the sound card or ether net card, so using the mandrake control center, I disabled sound and alsa on boot and now I have succeeded in starting kde twice. Could this be coincidence? But now I have kde but no sound!! My soundcard, the mcc correctly informs me is a

DescriptionVT8233 [AC97 Audio Controller]
Vendor:VIA technologies.
Bus: PCI
Bus ID: 1106:3059:1106:4161
Loc. on bus: 0:11:5
Module: snd-via82xx

Should that be a problem.

I additionally have an ethernet card etho, but I don't use it, and its a pain because mandrake keeps wanting to connect me to the internet with it, whereas I want to use my dialup modem on com1 (yes, I'm trying to be an EX windows user....). Is it possible for me to tell linux to ignore this ethernet card. It is noted by the mcc as follows:
vendor: VIA technologies
bus: PCI
bus id: 1106:3065:1106:102
description: VT6102 [Rhine II 10/100]
module: via-rhine

thanks for your help
