Kcontrol Fedora14

Hello Everyone,

I recently have found myself with some free time and decided to give Linux a shot and learn a bit. I downloaded Fedora 14, which was recommended to me and decided to start reading practical guide to red had linux third edition. The book is kind of leans toward the old Fedora 5. I have gotten to the portion of the book that talks about KDE Control Center.

My biggest problem is that I can't find/install kcontrol.
a) KDE Control Center does not exist (Kcontrol?) or I just can't find it in Fedora.
b) It has been discontinued and I am suppose to use something else.
c) It is part of kdeadmin package, which I can't install since it tells me kde-config is not there using the ./configure command in the directory of the file. I learned that kde-config exist it is just called kde4-config. So i am no longer sure if I should install the package since it seems it is for a different fedora version

Another quick question, I am having second thoughts about learning fedora through fedora 14 since it seems the most up to date version. Do companies using linux install the most up to date fedora or do they just use the old version because it would be counterproductive for me to learn the new Fedora when I would be expected to know my way around Fedora 5 or 6, which seems totally different compared to Fedora 14.

fedora changed VERY much since fedora 5
kde went from KDE 3 to KDE 4

you really need to but that book in the trash ( or use as a door stopper )

also fedora 14 is about to hit it's END OF LIFE in less than 60 days ( 30 days after fedora 16 is released )
It is HIGHLY recommended that you install Fedora-15

fedora 14 is NOT the most up to date 15 is the current release and 16 will be out soon

most DO NOT USE fedora .
Fedora is a Research and Development / TESTING distro and is VERY UNSUITABLE for the office or on servers

you NEED to do some research on just WHAT fedora is
you DO NOT use "old" versions
fedora DOSE NOT SUPPORT OLD VERSIONS!!!! after 13 months is DIES / "put out to pasture " / "killed off " / "End of Life"
R.I.P. / "buried six feet under"

when I would be expected to know my way around Fedora 5 or 6,
NO ONE !!! should be using the DEAD fedora 5 and 6
they have SECURITY HOLES in them that will NEVER be fixed
it should be "criminally libel" / a "lynching offense " to be using a dead version in a business

Business would normally use a LONG LIFE distro like RHEL or Debian or SELD ( SUSE Enterprise Desktop )

Thank you John VV for the clarification. How would you recommend I approach to learning Linux in general? Should I try a different OS since Fedora is used for research and development?

Here is kind of the list of what I want to learn:
How to use command line
The big don't do this stuff or be careful when you do this.
How to do the basic functions and tasks.
I was hoping to also learn some stuff that I had no intentions of learning, but did through reading some sort of book/online.

read , with fedora a starting place would be
https://docs.fedoraproject.org
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/index.html
and general

that old fedora 5 book will be fine for most of the Basic terminal commands , those have not changed much .For anything related to 14 or 15 that fedora 5 book will be of no use
in fedora 15 gnome2 is no longer used ( gnome3 is) and all the gnome related stuff in that book will be for gnome2 and NOT 3 .
Also in 14 and 15 kde4 is used so the kde3 guide in the book will not be of much use.

for some reading on fedora have a look at the wiki
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_Project_Wiki
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Overview

for things like writing scripts you can start at TLDP
http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/index.html
