Do you have konsole installed as well?
Kate uses KParts to integrate different parts of KDE.
So you might need to install other packages to gain full functionality from Kate.
I would look for kdeaddons3-kate package too.

configure kate

RedHat/Fedora has Kate available even under it's default Gnome installation. Terminal works properly. This involves of course that it has KDE properly installed as an alternative.

As already stated, Kate needs Konsole as a default. To change this go to:

Configure Kate > External Tools > Run Script

Change the setting according to your preferred terminal.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
SIMP
