It may not be particularly useful to tell [novice] askers not to use Kali.. because they want to (say they) use Kali. We'd be better off making "Kali - Script Kiddies Edition" with a Ubuntu installer.

I think to some degree this is the nature of this userbase
and simply put fewer of those questions will get answered. I do not think there should be any special response to questions that simply aren't researched or well written.

Gee, thanx

This post was my first. I wanted to test the nature of replies at LQ and my expectations were verified!! Kali is not my primary system, but I now know that snarkiness is paramount among LQ gurus.

Or maybe it's to do with the fact these kinds of questions come up all the time. The answer is - if you don't know how to run Kali, you shouldn't be running it.

Here's another topic about it and this one is written by a moderator:

"Kali here, Kali there! Why you should not expect detailed answers."

Snarkiness? I don't see any. I just see people trying to point you in the right direction. Kali is for expert use and for specialised purposes.

So let's have a look:

. You asked a question about Kali which someone who has the knowledge to run Kali should probably be able to answer themselves.

. You provided no information on which Kali version you are using.

. You didn't provide any context (did this problem just start recently?, has it ever worked?, does it also manifest itself with any other software?, etc.), or provide precise command-line output.

. You accused those people trying to give you advice (that Kali is a jump in the deep end) of snarkiness.

Good, I'm glad that your testing of LQ worked. The test has also shown us a thing or two about you too.

If you want to start again and try to get off on the right foot, go for it. However, I guarantee that if you continue as you are doing then you'll find it a struggle using Linux and getting support. Being able to get on with the community is important, and that means trying not to be adversarial if you can help it.

Welcome to LQ, by the way.

Kiddie system not necessary

You shouldn't spend any time generating a kiddie system for me since I have Ubuntu and Cinnamon installed in VBOX virtual systems. Primary is dual boot Windows 10 and Mint on separate PC. Kali strictly experimental on old Toshiba just gathering dust. Have you ever perused the excellent book by Ric Messier entitled "Learning Kali Linux?"
Advice to all LQ "newbies" (same as law students learning Courtroom Procedures):
"If you don't already know the answer, don't ask the question."

Wait, you have all that experience, and yet you didn't know that you would have to provide far more information in order for anyone to have a go at helping you with your issue? I honestly don't understand that.

Even now, after having given you an "out", you appear to have decided not to provide us with the context and diagnostic information I suggested. What is it exactly you want? Do you want your problem resolved or not?

Could you please tell us which version of Kali you are running.

Also, please launch the Software Center program from the command line and paste the output here.

Has this problem suddenly appeared or has it always been there since you installed the distro?

What have you already tried to resolve the problem? Have you searched on the internet for the error message you received to see if anyone else has experienced the same issue?

I'm honestly curious about this, because it sounds like a string of nonsense. Not an insult or accusation, just that it makes very little sense and comes off as a weird defensive response to some offense that didn't occur.

Cinnamon is not a distro, so are you running Cinnamon on Ubuntu? Some other distro, maybe Mint? If you dual boot Windows 10 and have Mint on a separate PC, what are you dual booting Win10 with? Did you have an actual question then simply not like the response, or did you decide that you wanted to assert your intellectual/moral superiority over those who might be "snarky" by wasting the time of those kind enough to try and help, and how does that make you any different than those that failed your "test" if the latter?

I know that's a lot of questions, but dont worry, this is just a test.
