The installer failed with exit code 1: VBoxExtPackHelperApp.exe: error: Failed to rename the temporary directory to the final one: VERR_ACCESS_DENIED ('C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\ExtensionPacks\Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-_-inst-5680' -> 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\ExtensionPacks\Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack')

Did you try re-downloading the image? It may have been corrupted.

I would just download the light image, you can always just download whatever missing packages you require

Run an md5 checksum on the downloaded iso file to check it against the sha1sum at the Kali site.

https://www.kali.org/downloads/

I found this detailed site with instructions specifically on installing Kali in VirtualBox. You might take a look at it.

Hey SilentJustice - this is odd. A suggestion: I just fired up my Virtualbox installation on a Windows 10 session and realized I hadn't updated it in quite a while - I was still on 5.0.16. I updated to 5.1.14 and reinstalled the extension pack - all went well. I realize you have other VMs running successfully on your VB host, so I don't want to suggest anything that would destabilize that, but make sure you're up to date. One of the disadvantages of running VB on Windows is that you have to remember to update the versions yourself. So maybe reinstalling the current (5.1.14) version of VirtualBox and its extension pack may help.

Best :-)

there are also "workshops"

you really will need the experience level of about a masters in computer sciences specializing in linux

An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from th emenu, or skip it and choose something else.

The default size for the hard disk set by VMware is 8GB. Set it to 20 GB and it will go through

Better late than never..

Hi there! I've come across the same problem when installing Kali Linux VB image on my Windows machine. After clicking "continue" on the window that reads "An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Install the system", I just clicked on "Partitions" and deleted every partition- then redid the regular routine steps in setting up. Worked like a charm.

I'm pretty sure a dual boot would be a better option. Some hardware functions you might need from Kali is not available in a virtualbox installation.
