Kali install
 

Hi all,
I'm pretty new to Linux so bare with me...
I'm trying to install Kali 2016.2, I load the disc and the system boots to the options screen, and I choose Install, after several seconds the screen goes blank, no blinking curser, no flashing green light telling me the disc is working, nothing.
Could it be the hard drive? It's a sata hard drive from 2012 maybe 2011, not that this matters much...
I do notice that if I choose any of the "live" options it does load...

All the tools in Kali are available in other distros. So you might want to start with an easier one to install and then learn the tools there one at a time before moving to Kali. A good one to start with is Linux Mint.

Which tools on Kali are you interested in starting with?

I had an earlier distro on this particular box and at one point was able to get as far as re formatting the drive for installation on a single partition...
I will probably take your advice and start with baby steps...

To echo Turbocapitalist's statement on using an easier distribution of Linux, Kali is not recommended for new Linux users but is specifically geared for experienced users who are interested in penetration testing. ;)

I did try to load the earlier distro only to have the same thing happen.
The machine has an older ATX board 2gigs of ramm a 500gb sata hd
The optical drive is an older dvd rw
Second hand monitor....im cheap
Thinking about building a new machine

Centos 6.8 or 7.2 will run just fine on that older hardware
and so will Debian 7 or 8

i have Scientific linux 6.8 ( clone of rhel 6.8) running on a 16 year old pentium4 cpu with 1 gig ram and a 16 year old nvidia gforce2 card

Try a different distro for different results. Linux Mint is easy to install and there are several pre-configured variants. If you want to start light and build up, then try something like Lubuntu.

If you plan to do a lot of distro hopping or even many reinstallations of the same distro, you might want to start out with a separate /home directory so you can keep your data and more of your settings between reinstallations.

Also going to test optical drive and hard drive, may have to invest in hardware.

Lightweight distros are best on older hardware, anything that doesn't use KDE or GNOME.

I ran or attempted to run disk diagnostics with ubcd all of which hung in the process.
I purchased a 2T sata drive and Kali is installing seamlessly.

it seems posts containing "experienced user warns about kali linux not being a newbie distro" are perceived as some kind of background noise nowadays.

like, 1 mr robot kid says to another:

There are aspects of Kali that I use to secure my own personal home network.
I use Nagios for IDS as I get email alerts of potential threats.
For me, and I speak only for myself, the best way to learn something is get " hands on"!
Therefore I will use Kali, at my leisure, to learn it and use to protect myself and family when they are on my home network.
Agreed, Kali is can be quite complex and powerful, so those of you that discourage it's use, hopefully it will bring you some solace that I use an older version of Suse as my main OS....

Not really. Those tools are all part and parcel of any available distro. You have only to add the packages from your distro's repository. I find that the RPM-based distros, when I have checked, are behind some of the APT-based ones, but otherwise the tools are still there.

Kali is useful but not special. However, I realize now that answers regarding Kali should be along the lines of that if you have to ask about it, you are not ready for it and should not be running it.

Turbo, when I started the thread I was only asking what could be the problem with the install.
I was not looking to be scollded as if I were 10!
All folks had to do was suggest what could have been the problem.
As it turns out it was hardware related and not my ability to accomplish a successful install of an operating system.
I'm going to use Kali regardless and other distros of lunux, I find it to be the best way for me to learn the ins and outs of linux.
That being said I will also continue to ask questions, I do believe that IS what this forum is all about?
I have a questioning attitude any way I think of it as another layer if security and wish that others would also have this attitude it might open eyes as to what is going on in this world.
I appreciate all the candor as it has been a learning experience and hopefully we will continue...
