Kali GNU/Linux Rolling 64-bit TO something like Ubuntu using VirtualBox?
 

Hello,

I did NOT choose to have Kali Linux on my current computer. I don't mind it really, however, its come to my attention that there may be some better alternatives to learn from.

I don't want to 'replace' the Kali OS at all. My question is, Can I use something like VirtualBox to 'run' under Kali and then run (new Linux OS such as Ubuntu) without changing / damaging Kali?

I'm still trying to figure out which Linux OS to 'play with' and admittedly I'm really into playing games. 3D games-fun games ect.. But getting back to the question for clarity. I'm guessing the VirtualBox will allow me to simply 'open?' up and run Ubuntu without doing all the RESTARTING of the PC itself? ... I'm hoping this is the case.

I brought up the fact that I like gaming because I'm rather unclear which Linux OS would be most accommodating for such interests.

Anyhow, I hope I'm making a clear question for what my needs are.

Most games are written for Windows. There are some for Linux. You are correct about virtualbox. You open the program from within kali, create a virtual machine, install the operating system, and then you can just run it in a window when you want. Ubuntu would be fine for gaming.

Yah, I'm pretty much aware that most games are made for Windows. But I'm quite content in finding some for Linux just to toy with.

I guess I'll be off now to figure out how to get VirtualBox going and then of course Ubuntu. Not sure where exactly where to begin, however, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!! :D

If you have happened to think of or remembered some type of helpful hints or tips, I'm all ears.. At the moment I'm just to the point to where I can navigate around within the GNOME Terminal.. I can create directories and some text files and such.. But anyhow, I thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions.

I would just install virtualbox from the repos. If you want USB in your VM, you have to download the extension pack from oracle. Other than that it's always just worked for me.

As I was playing around with stuff on my computer I noticed that I've already got a version of VirtualBox installed here's what its showing me..

VirtualBox Graphical User Interface Version 5.1.18_Debian r114002

I've since gone out and downloaded a Ubuntu iso file which is called

ubuntu-16.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso

My hope is that these two will be compatible with eachother lol! Not really sure yet. Anyhow, the last time I had any experience with an iso file I was running it from a Windows OS. I KNOW I've run across a video/tutorial that shows how to install various things from within the GNOME-Terminal.. I'll probably just watch and read some more in oder to find it again.. Oh, I currently don't even have anything to plug into a USB anyhow as far as storage goes, so I'm just trying to do everything off the hard drive provided.

I got this computer from my son after I come back from Colorado after being homeless for about 4 years (which explains why I'm just taking what I can get when it comes to computers ...Kali-Linux just happens to be what's on here.) ... So at the moment I'm just enjoying learning what I can as I go forward, this is the first time I've even messed with a computer in years lol! So I'm a bit rusty in all directions :D

Why do you want to leave Kali on there?
unless you are using it you might as well back up any data to an external drive/USB stick and then stick on a less scary Linux OS!

Thank you for taking the time to help out.. At this point in time, I'm really not sure what Im wanting to do all around, except to explore everything I can learn concerning Linux and all it has to offer.

What I've gathered so far is that after installing Virtualbox and then Ubuntu <- is NOT what I was expecting/hoping for lol!

I guess first off, I don't believe that my computer is powerful enough to work with a virtual OS .. way too laggy!!

Anyhow, I was given a USB stick the other day, and I've read some things about installing Ubuntu on the USB stick. I guess, there's several ways to go about doing such things. I'll have to look into it further as to what my options really are. Currently, I'm a bit vague on everything and don't really know where to start... Ultimately I sort of want to 'try them all' so to speak.

Probably the one thing I want to do is to keep the Kali-Linux overall. I may change my mind further down the road, but for now, I like Kali.

If you happen to have any tips or suggestions as to what I can do with this USB stick, I'd love to hear back from you! :)

As there are several other distro's for beginners that would make life a lot easier for you to learn Linux. Then you could have a look at Kali later on.
