K8VT800(Pro) Motherboard - Sound Card (Realtek ALC658)

I just purchased a new box with the Gigabyte K8VT800 (Pro) motherboard and the Athlon 64 processor. This motherboard includes the Realtek ALC658 on-board sound card. This sound card uses the AC97 codec.

The Suse 9.0 installation process (using 2.4.21-192-athlon kernel) recognized everything, including the sound card and serial ATA drive (Western Digital 80Gb). The SATA worked right off with no problems.

Although, in theory (according to YAST), the sound card is configured and available, I can not generate any system sounds or play an audio CD. I get no error messages, it simply doesn't work.

The drivers installed are:
Driver Info #0:
Driver Info: snd-via686,snd-via8233

Has anyone experienced something like this?

Thanks in advance,

Do you use ALSA? I use ALSA on the same kind of integrated sound card (different model motherboard though). The sound is sometimes has some static in pure-ALSA mode, but is fine using OSS compatability extensions. This could be a SuSE thing though, i use slackware. In any case try installing a different sound driver and see what happens, as you describe the situation it couldn't make the situation any worse . EDIT I just realized something, is your sound muted? I remember on my computer, ALSA fired up for the first time with all channels muted. If this is the problem you'll probably slap yourself with a wet salmon; but, hey, its not something major! /EDIT

Thanks for your reply.

I kept trying different things yesterday after I left this message on the board and actually managed to completely hose my system Since it was a new box, I decided to just start over and the second time around the sound card worked fine. You though about it being mute was correct though and in both cases I had to play with the mixer to get it to work. Makes no sense to me.

Now that the sound is working I will spend some time (and brain cells) on getting my Officejet 6110xi all-in-one printer/scanner/fax working... We'll see how that goes.

Thanks again.
