K3B won't let my DVD+RW drive write CD-Rs

I have no problems writing DVDs with K3B, but it won't let me write any CDRs. Under devices in the K3B configuration menu, it says that my drive is capable of cd-rw, dvd+r and dvd+rw, but not cdr. I know that my drive definitely can write cdrs, as I can use other applications, like the nautilus cd burner. It is also flagged as cdr capable under device manager. I'm running Ubuntu (debian/gnome) and my drive is a _NEC DVD+RW ND1100A. Thanks for any help.

True, there are many different ways to burn CDs in linux...

What errors are you getting when you try to burn on a new CD-R?
