k3b - will not burn cd
Hi,
I just discovered that k3b (v. 1.0 - Adept does not seem to have any later version) will not burn CDs for me at all. I am at a loss as to where to start to troubleshoot this.
When I boot fresh, I can play music CDs, but once I try to run k3b to make a data CD, it tries to burn, then fails with error code 255. After that, k3b tells me it can't detect my drive. Sometimes, the drive becomes totally disabled and I cannot even eject the CD unless I do so manually.
I am running a dell latitude C610, with kubuntu feisty. As far as I know, the CD drive is OEM. This laptop was given to me, so I have no documentation. I have not taken the drive out to see what it is, but I can do that if there isn't an easier command-line method.
I would like to be able to burn basic data CDs, so this is frustrating.
Can anyone give me any guidance as to where to start the troubleshooting?
Thanks.

Maybe it is a permissions issue. First try burning a cd as root. If it burns, then it is a permissions issue.
Try it and post the results.

Maybe I should try installing a later version from the website? Or reinstalling this application? I have done 2 version upgrades to Feisty, so maybe something happened along the way. I never tried to burn a cd before this, so I don't know if it ever worked.
Thanks.

Well seems u should upgrade your K3B. As for the output, i m no expert, but I did get an error due to permission issues, which I thought could have been ur problem.

Just for comparison, I downloaded a trial version of Nero Linux 3. This program burned with no problems, so I know at least it is not a problem with my hardware.
I am trying to figure out the whole cdrom thing here - I have a folder: /media/cdrom, which I originally thought was the right thing to choose for backing up to cd in another program, Keep. Instead Keep just dumped the backup files in this folder. I know from the Kubuntu configuration menus that my writer drive is listed as /dev/scd0. But in Keep, I couldn't find a way to point to this.
Since I seem to have issues with my cdrom in both K3b and Keep, I suspect that I am missing some vital understanding of how linux handles these devices. Maybe if I understood that better, I could troubleshoot K3b. With Keep, I think I just don't know how to tell it to burn to cdrom. I am researching that now - probably will find out it is easy...
Much to learn - any comments welcome.

Well, I have read somewhere on this site that Dell boxes sometimes have unusual hardware. Even though the 2.6 linux kernel is a major breakthrough in hardware issues, this may be something unresolved. Since I presume that your hardware is old and out of production, i also suspect that linux may be dropping support for older hardware.
BTW I am on a 4 year old Compaq presario laptop. But I dont have any issues.
If your Nero trial version is working, just be happy about it.
