k3b PERFORM OPC failed

Hi all,
Wow, with only three peripherals left to 'conquer' I'm slowly but surely coming to grips with Linux. But still, one of the three peripherals that is still resisting my move is my Plextor PX708A dvd-writer. Under my Mandrake 10 install I use k3b to write cd's with this drive (this part works fine), but when I try to write dvd's (-r and +r Nashau and EMTec discs tried) I get the following error:

:-[ PERFORM OPC failed with SK=5h/ASC=2Ch/ACQ=00h]: Input/output error

I've been googling around the last few days but I can't seem to find an answer that actually works. I tried writing as root but that brought me no luck, tried changing the write speed to 1x and to ignore (didn't work) and I tried updating my dvd+rw-tools but had no luck there either. Can anyone put me on the right path?
Below is a copy/paste of K3b's error log.
Thanks in advance for any help

error log:

Which kernel version did you install with mandrake 10? I know it will let you install 2.4 or 2.6?

This will probably aggravate my newbie status, but I didn't know I had a choice and had the illusion I was working with a 2.6 kernell. I know I can automount and read packet dvd's (written under windows) and I think that implies version 2.6, but is there anywhere I can check the version?

Type "uname -r" in console.

BTW: I have the exact same problem with my Plextor. Haven't found a solution..

Hey thanks for the reply. I have found a workaround for now, but it isn't pretty If I burn an image first I can burn the dvd from that, direct writing still elludes me however.
Cheers,
Merijn

Hi,
I know this is an ancient thread, but I wanted to let you know that installing Mandrake 10.1 (community) with the newest version of the cdtools and k3b has solved my DAO dvd writing problem with the Plextor drive mentioned above. I thought it might still be usefull to anyone googling into this thread.
Cheers,
Merijn

Sony DVD RW DW-U10A ... DVD+RW media works

Hi,

I been researching this error and using DVD+RW media is the only
solution I've found .... worth a try.

This is one of those RW-/RW+ write everything drives, yea, right.

I've had no success with DVD-R nor DVD+R ... fails in K3b with
:-[ PERFORM OPC failed with SK=3h/ASC=73h/ACQ=03h]: Input/output error every time.

Here's a successful burn ...
