Yes, I'm new to this forum but have been involved with UNIX/AIX/LINUX for many years. I got this old phone and want to download music to it. Can you point me to the right forum?

Thanks in Advance

There is Android forum:
you account will work there too.
As for transferring files - does the memory card not automount in Ubuntu when plugging USB cable?
There are many ways to do it. If there are no means to connect wifi or even Dropbox can be set up.

on my galaxy s2, i plug it in via usb and select usb mass storage on the fone.

then i can drag-and-drop files to it on the pc.

if the pc and fone are connected to the same router, you can look into sshdroid , i use it to mount an sshfs wifi drive from my pc to fone.

I was wondering how to get music from iTunes onto my Google Nexus S -- turns out you can just plug the phone in via usb and drag the files straight out of the itunes window into the Music directory on the phone. Not sure that applies here but I wish I had known how easy it was. I spent so much time sort of worrying about it and scheming.
