just starting out, need help with permissions

hi guys, this is just my second week in my linux class, half of it is online, so a lot of the material is just thrown on at once, and its kind of hard to keep up..and she sometimes takes over 2 days to write back, so thats why im not bothering asking her

my question that shes asking is

"Write the permissions for the file /, using the syntax rwxr-xr-x."

then follows up with

"Write the permissions for the file /, using the octal notation i.e. rwxr-xr-x is 755."

and theres like 10 more questions like this, but instead of just "/" they will want to know "etc/hosts..then etc/passwd"

im just not exactly sure what kind of an answer she is wanting. any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance
