Just starting off in Linux. Need help with OpenGL

Hey guys. I just recently installed linux so I don't really know much about it and how to get stuff working. I tried installing Quake3 and I got the following in the console:

Q3 1.31 linux-i386 Dec 17 2001

Current search path:
/root/.q3a/baseq3
/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak7.pk3 (4 files)

I guess I need to install Open GL or something, but when trying MESA and some others, it was not at all straight forward how to get things up and running, there was talk of having to compile things etc. I have mandrake 8.1 installed and I am using Gnome. My video card is a Radeon 64 MB DDR. Thanks for the help.

What version of XFree86 do you use? if it is 4.xx than the accelearated support provided by ati driver, XFree86 just released its latest version of XFree86 4.2.0, you might look at it, read all docs on their page, download the binaries and install it according to README files the binaries are available here
