Just setting up Pi 3B+ and Raspberry Buster and am stuck.

Installed via the 32GB Class 10 Micro SD Card Preloaded w/ RASPBIAN OS.Got as far as the pi@raspberrypi: prompt, typed in the startx command and got the error msg; "unable to connect to x server: connection refused.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Just setting up Pi 3B+ and Raspberry Buster and am stuck.

It's a bit short...

What your ~/.xinitrc looks like?

What are the logs saying?

This is a bit embarrassing but, my only experience with Linux/Raspbian is putting an micro SD card in and bringing up my Raspberry Pi. . . . which in installed. But that's as far as I got.

what is preloaded on that SD card? Where is it from?
Did you enter anything else before startx, or ? How did you get that pi@raspberrypi: prompt at all? Is there anything written (displayed) before that prompt? Probably an error message? Usually raspbian automatically executes startx, you do not need to do that, but ....

Hello,
The pre loaded card worked well and got me to the pi:raspberrypi prompt and got the "unable to connect to x server: connection refused" error msg. Got nothing before that, except the install instructions which appeared to be falling into line. All indications was that all was well up to that point. The instruction to find the "x" file were over my head.

The pre loaded Noobs and pi 3b+ files came from Amazon.
Pi 3b+ it'self is working fine, except I cannot address my SD card in the File Mgr.

Thanks,
Don

ok, that is half way. How did you get that prompt. Exactly what steps did you make to get it? Probably you can take a photo also and post it... (before you entered startx)

It would likely be better to create your own card, the one you got could be an old one, & NOOBS is not the best way to start, better off installing directly.
