Just put Linux mint 17.2 on my HP and screen stays black when starting computer

Just put Linux mint 17.2 on my HP laptop and screen stays black when starting computer. Been suspending instead of shutting down to avoid the issue but want to get this to work right
Also been getting a list of failures that grow as I keep suspending.
I'm sure there is a fix for this can someone let me know what it is?
The laptop is a HP Pavillon AMD 8 with a new 1TB hard drive. I removed the original hard drive with the windows 8 that I was completely feed up with.

Did you use the option to erase disk and install Mint? You don't mention having any other OS installed. Is this UEFI or MBR on the install?

I had a friend who has a computer shop install Linuxmint 17.2 after I had tried before. That was after replacing the hard drive with a new one (no operating system). I had tried to replace the windows 8 on the old hard drive and it would not load, that is why the hard drive was replaced.
When I loaded mint 17.2 the first time from a CD everything looked to work fine for a couple days then it started giving me a black screen on start up. I'd have to go to bios to get the screen to work. the bios has two boot lists, one was saying it is for windows 8 or newer and the other is called legacy boot (I'll get back to this). After using the bios to get the screen working (when exiting bios the screen came on with Linux) a few times I left the CD in the reader and it booted from that about half the time.
After getting frustrated with that and finally having time to get to my friends shop (about 4 weeks) he wasn't able to solve the problem and reloaded Linux mint 17.2. It was a different version or had enough updates that it had a very different look and some changes in menu layout. A day and half later it started giving me the black screen on start up again. Went the bios route again but could take several times going that route to get the screen to stay on for mint, since then have been using suspend instead of shutting down. When my friend reloaded he set it to legacy boot. I do not have a copy of the CD he loaded from last time and the one I have does nothing now if it is in when restarting.
I do not know what you are asking on whether it is UEFI or MBR on install and couldn't say if I did know since I didn't do the current install, yancek. Given that this problem showed up on on both installs I have doubts that another reinstall is the fix, to me it looks like there is and update or fix that is not in the system upload and the update is not seeing it yet.

I am not very well versed in computers and have been running into enough walls to get a headache but as yet I'd sooner shoot the laptop before going to windows again.
I have had little time available to get back to my friends place and will be a couple weeks till I will.

Sometimes you have to try different distros. I had one new machine which would not run Mint 17, but did run Korora great.

You need to know if your HP is UEFI or not, and you need to know if your new hard drive is partitioned GPT or msdos. The installation processes are different.
