just isntalled slack: couple big problems
 

i just isntalled slack 10.0 and got my mouse and network card working (as i can ping and recieve packets) all by myself :D
however, there are afew big problems now:

1
when i 'startx' it displays the splash screen and loads the components, but haults on loading 'nautilus' but disappears when i click it. when i try and click on the file browser (nautilus) or run from command line it doesnt load but gives errors (from command line).. which i can post once i reboot and write down the errors.
when isntalling slack i selected all the default options for the WMs available.. so i should have fluxbox, blackbox, and afew others isntalled too but i wasnt sure how to run them.

the default browser (galeon) doesnt load when i click it.. mozilla doesnt load when i click it, and displays 3 messages when i try to run it from console, then haults.. i can post these 3 lines in a bit

since i dont have a browser, i rebooted, downloaded firefox into windows, rebooted into linux and copied it and tried to install it there. it gave an error about no 'libxpcom.so' found... where can i download this? iv searched online but dont get many useful results.

is there nothing like synaptic or a friendly gui for package management in slack [by default at least]? iv tried running the commands 'apt' and 'apt-get' and it said they are both not found.. im not familiar with either [if the first one even exists] but i figured id try it since i dont have my ubuntu's synaptic

the background is an ugly gray with black dots on it, which im sure some people might know what im talking about. is there a command to change this? in the panel up top i cant seem to find a menu item that relates to more or less any system configuration.. and when i right click the background nothing happens, and there is no icons either...
i thought maybe gnome-desktop wasnt running so i typed that command but it said command not found.. not sure how to fix this? (im using gnome 2.6 i believe is the version)

try another wm, use xwmconfig. do you have the same problems? any error messages and other output would help narrow things down.

1. not sure about nautilus - but try running "xwmconfig" as an easy way to change wm's. or, change the link in /etc/X11/xinit yourself. or, create an ~/.xinitrc. or you could always run GDM/KDM and select from there.

2. need more info

3. try using the slack package from an official mirror (you can use lynx or wget to get it):

4. there are swaret, slapt-get, and at least one other I can't remember now. each has pros/cons - when you're ready for a flame war ask which is better in the slack forum :D

5. I guess that's gnome-related? sorry I don't use it.....
