Just installed SuSE Linux Professional...

Hi everyone...

I am a very experienced Windows user, but a brand new Linux user. I just installed SuSE Professional 9.1 and everything went smooth, I have a dual boot setup with Windows XP and it's working perfectly.

So, I am at the desktop in SuSE now and really have no idea what to do from here. Can any kind soul direct me to some good tutorials or information that they think a brand new user would benefit from? I would be interested in learning how to use this "Wine" software that would let me run some Windows apps on Linux like AOL Instant Messenger, and also getting Mozilla Firefox installed here.

Thank you a ton for anyone that is willing to help.

I'd suggest reading about apt for Suse here: http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/

If you get apt installed, it will make updating and installing software much easier. "Gaim" is a Linux-equivalent to AOL Instant Messanger. It will be much easier in general to use Linux native software than to try and get Wine working.

The reason I was asking about Wine and AIM is because I like to use the Direct Connect feature with a buddy in AIM to post images and sounds, I was under the impression the 3rd party chat clients didn't support that...

Thanks Doolspin for the sites I will bookmark them now. :)

A Suse Firefox RPM is available.
Using "rpm -i MozillaFirefox-1.0-2.1.i586.rpm" (no quotes) from the currect directory will install it.

Clicking on Start-> Internet -> Chat will start Kopete which does AIM, MSN, Yahoo and other stuff...

The real AIM is available for Linux.

Good Luck.

I'm in the same situation buddy. I know everything about windows --- and jack about linux. Do you find it as hard to use as I do? Well its stable as a rock anyway.

Well, wine may not run every windows app. In fact, most fail :( . So you should install things meant for linux.
http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-l...en/table.shtml

for a table of good linux software that are equivalent to that of windows.
