I have just been sent a cdrom that is intended as "it says" for a "pc". I was expecting that this would run on Ubuntu but alas it does not. Is there an app that would allow to run this cdrom??
I've googled it and not found anything

Yes, they probably mean Windows. No, Windows software won't run under Linux, anymore than Mac software will run under Windows.

You MIGHT be able to use Wine (heavily mentioned through Google searches), to run a program, but some won't work. Since you don't say what is on this CDROM, or what you're trying to do, it's hard to be more specific.

We can't be much help if we don't know what's on the CD---application? music? If you put it in the drive, what happens? Can you at least open it with the file manager?

It's probably for windows.
You have been fooled by the false terminology about macs and pc's.

Examples:
you can have a mac without having mac os.
you can have a pc without windows.
you can have a pc with mac os(osx86).
you can have a mac with windows.
you can have a linux in both mac and pc.

If I was you I sue the bastards for fooling you.

Ok here's an update:

I can actually open up the cdrom through places/computer/...
But it won't run, so the error message says "Error autorunning software Cannot find the autorun program"

Its a plumbing cdrom, which contains i assume demonstrations, presentations etc. On the browser i see gif, mpeg files, drawings, logos etc.

Look for a file index.html and start it.

Or look for any kind of executable file---or for something like a powerpoint slide show (.pps)

Run this on the highest level directory for the CD:

ls -lR > ~/contents.txt

Post this file (as an attachment) and we can see everything on the CD.

OR:
ls -lR | grep html
ls -lR | grep pps
ls -lR | grep exe
etc.

since macs are personal computers arent they also pc's ? (they even now use x86 based cpu's)

I believe so, yes.

I'm personally alright with the distinction, since macs were a different architecture, the name stayed even after the adoption of x86 based cpu's.

I'm ok if one use that distinction to specify hardware.

I'm not ok in software terms, since pc or mac terminology doesn't make any sense in the case of software.
A Cd or DVD with "For PC" label doesn't make any sense. Except if the CD or DVD only contain html, images, sound or video. But even in this case I think a label "For use in a computer." makes more sense, since it is content that can be used in any computer(Personal or not).

I have done as best i can to show you whats in this darned cdrom, i've taken a screenshot
When i browse into the cdrom I can't open the .htm, .mpg or even .pdf files
On the highest level of the cdrom theres a autorun.inf that i can't display or run
At the highest level there's a coppercd.htm file which doesn't respond, display or run

There is no sound from the cdrom drive when i click on any of the above files, just an eerie silence

OK, to me

copper.bat
AUTORUN.INF

mean MS-Windows.

However, you should be able to open any htm/html/jpg/mpg/pdf files in your browser and OpenOffice should be able to open MS-Office files.
Really, your browser should recognise even MS-Office stuff and call OO to deal with it (similar to how it handles pdfs)

Since it has a bat file and an html file on the same directory, I could bet that the bat file is just used on windows to launch the default browser with the file Copppered.htm

If that's the case you can simple "run" the CD by opening that Coppered.htm, and it should have exactly the same effect as in Windows.

OK that was just the problem, I could not access it with the file browser but yes with Firefox I was able via coppercd.htm

However, we are all gonna learn from this maybe even how to bend a pipe rather than this mind bending fandango, so please stick with me. However it will not display all the image on the html pages. So some .gif files display properly but others don't.
The video files, pdf etc are all ok.

^ it probably has something to do with mIxEd-CaSe (linux is case-sensitive, windows is not).
open a terminal and type in:to see what the file name actually is.

actually that url is fubar. it contains both forward-slash (/) -- which is the directory delimiter for linux and back-slash (\) -- which is the directory delimiter for dos/ windows. i guess firefox cant find that file.
