Joining a home network

How do I join a home network on Umbuntu 11.1? The network was established on Microsoft XP Pro, then upgraded to Win 7.

What are you trying to do? What kind of network are you trying to set up? Samba? Print server? What kind of networking hardware are you using?

If you are using that awful Microsoft Home Group thing (I think that's what they call it), my understanding is its functionality is limited to other computers using Home Group, that is, Linux need not apply.
