Jiffies not getting updated in calibrate_delay() function

Hi all,
Can anyone tellme what is the reason for 'jiffies' variable not getting updated in 'calibrate_delay()' function which gets called in 'start_kernel()'function present in init/main.c file? Its going in an infinite loop and not exiting out of the calibrate_delay() function. I am working in linux-2.6.25 kernel.
